Pirates flew flags with many different symbols. This design pulls from those symbols used on pirate flags and ancient tombstones.
The skull and crossbones and less often used hourglass were all customary in pirate culture. This set of symbols would be flown to intimidate opposing ships into surrendering and would often be hoisted to surprise unknowing vessels and their crews.
